While looking for a hood ornament for my car, we realized that nice, original hood ornaments are hard to come by, and found out that there are currently no reproductions readily available. We then decided to make reproductions to help fund my project, and Service Motors was very kind in providing us a hood ornament to 3D scan. After sanding, filling, and priming, we mounted the hood ornament to a stand and painted it in a matte white. I took it to my art teacher at school, where he 3D scanned it. Although the scan was very nice, it was not at the level of detail we required; for this application, we needed a very exact master. We then turned to Greg Hoeting of Exact Metrology for more detailed 3D scanning services, which they graciously provided. We edited the 3D files to create VC and CD versions with threaded holes matching the originals. Finally, we sent them off to be machined out of aluminum and chrome plated.
